Publishing Your Amazon Kindle eBook Via KDP

How to self-publish your Kindle eBook on Amazon using KDP.

This manual explains how to format your book using Microsoft Word on either a PC or a Mac for publication on Amazon using the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) web-based interface. Formatting books for publication on Amazon isn't exactly a sexy subject, but it is about to become fundamental to your life as a self-published author. Let me save you some time and frustration by walking you through the process your first time. I've done this more than 100 times myself, so I think I'm ready to lead the way.

Before we begin, I want to point out that publishing a book on Amazon may not be as straightforward as you originally thought. Before starting, you'll need to format your book for publication and create a book cover. In addition to making your book available in eBook format via KDP, Amazon provides services for selling your book in Print on Demand (POD) paperback format. This chapter addresses publishing your book in both eBook and POD paperback formats. Other chapters in this book address manuscript formatting.

This book is terse but packed with information. I'll assume you've made your decision to self-publish and you don't need to read all that marketing hype. I'm here to guide you through the process of publishing on Amazon with as few missteps as possible.

Self-publishing Process

As input to the self-publishing process, you need to supply a finished manuscript. Note that a finished manuscript has been copy editing to remove spelling, grammar and word usage errors. With a finished manuscript in hand, you'll learn in this book to perform the following simple steps:

Book Cover Creation

In the book Creating Books Covers with Microsoft Powerpoint for Self-publishing Beginners, you'll learn to create book covers for your eBook and POD paperback formatted books using Microsoft PowerPoint 2016. You'll also receive a review of other book cover creation options, including the use of the free Canva web-based application and the free Gnu Image Manipulation Program (GIMP).

Manuscript Formatting

In chapter 2, Manuscript Formatting with Microsoft Word 2016, you'll learn to format your manuscript for publication using Microsoft Word 2016. By formatting your manuscript, you'll clean up any errors in your book (e.g. ugly formatting and unneeded whitespace) to make sure it presents well on Kindle devices.

Book Publication

In this chapter, you'll learn how to publish your formatted manuscript and book cover on Amazon in Kindle eBook and POD paperback formats using KDP.

Publication Requirements

As previously mentioned, the publication process requires a finished manuscript that has been formatted for publication. I also strongly recommend that you copy edit your manuscript and have others do the same before publishing. See chapter 4, Manuscript Formatting with Microsoft Word 2016, for instructions on how to format your manuscript.

You'll also need a professional quality book cover. Remember, readers do judge a book by its cover. You can always buy a book cover off Fiverr or a similar site for $50 to $100, but I recommend creating a free book cover yourself so you can get exactly what you want and save some money. See the book Creating Books Covers with Microsoft Powerpoint for Self-publishing Beginners for instructions on creating your own book cover using Microsoft PowerPoint 2016.
